Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a New York book broker who specializes in tracking down rare and exotic volumes for well-heeled collectors. Corso brings to his work a breadth of knowledge, a direct manner and a keen eye. He also brings to it an essentially cold-blooded, amoral nature; to help himself, Corso will not hesitate to trick an under-educated owner into selling him a valuable four-volume edition of Don Quixote for next to nothing. Corso’s mercenary ethos makes him the preferred book detective of the urbane publisher Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), whose climate-controlled library is entirely devoted to books about the Devil, and who has an unusual assignment for Corso. Basically a "foreign" film, with Johnny Depp as the lead actor. Depp, being immensely prolific, probably doesn't really care about the box office potential of this movie, hence the fact that it has got very little publicity. Probably won't be a hit, due to lack of knowledge about the movie.

Review By Robert Oliver

I just saw this movie and had a great time watching it. I have since read many bad reviews, but it was almost like they all either missed the point of the movie, or don't like Polanski's style. Ninth Gate is slow paced, but only in the same way that Rosemary's Baby was. I guess critics would rather have another Stigmata or End of Days. It's not as good as Rosemary because it's got a more ambitious storyline, and simple usually works better in horror. Having said that, it reminded me of Fearless Vampire Killers, something critics all seem to like now, but probably hated when it came out. Deep is superb as usual and the supporting cast was great. The point of the movie is to experience a fun little Satanic movie, which is exactly what it is. It doesn't take itself too seriously, therefore the typical Polanski silliness fits rather well, which is the point most critics seemed to have disregarded. Give it about two years when this is an underground cult hit and critics will do their typical about-face faster than Roger Ebert rescinded his bad review of Thin Red Line to Martin Scorcese.
